The skis had been cloudy all day and the prediction for Northern Lights was set for the evening. Most Michiganders know that most nights it's cloudy so to be able to see an Astro event is rare. I waited until about 11 or so and was going to go to bed. I decided to go look up at the night sky and noticed I could see a few stars between the clouds. I packed my gear and headed to Higgins Lake South State Park. When I got to the beach it was still mostly cloudy but there were some openings in the sky. I set up and after about twenty minutes I could see a light haze in the Northern sky. I took some test shots and it was definitely purple in color. After about 15 minutes the sky opened up and I was able to see the Northern Lights. I couldn't believe it, I was running in the dark up and down the beach looking for just the right perspective. After about thirty minutes the sky started to cloud back up and the show was over. So glad I went.
Hi, I've been in photography most of my life since I was fourteen when I shot film. I switched to digital back in 2009 and am amazed at the changes since then. In June 2020 I was chosen by the DNR of Michigan to be an ambassador for the State Parks of Michigan showcasing them through my images. I have also been the Vice President and President of the Mid Michigan Photo Club in Lansing, MI. I have started a couple of Facebook pages that may interest you the first is my JoeHolleyPhotography page and the second is Michigan Up North (Pictures only). You can also find me on Instagram @jholleywoodii I am primarily a Landscape photographer but have done my share of Weddings, SR. Pictures, and family portraits. Email me if you're interested...
